sermon: One by One Until Done
Given 23-Mar-19; Sermon #1479B; 35 minutes
Charles Whitaker refutes a heresy, stemming from a faulty interpretation of Jeremiah 31:34. Adherents of this heresy hold that God has not yet instituted the New Covenant, as indicated by the fact that the Church is deeply involved in teaching. In point of fact, teaching is a fundamental part of God's Work today. God instituted the Old Covenant in a day, on a national level. But, John 6:44 indicates that God makes the New Covenant with individuals. Hence, the implementation of the New Covenant is incremental and progressive. That implementation began in 31 AD, according to Acts 2:16, but it continues through these last days, and will continue through the Millennium and the White Throne period. Jeremiah 31:34 indicates that God's implementation of the New Covenant is iterative, as God calls people one-by-one, over a long period of time. Metaphorically, Jeremiah 31:34 might describe a snowball rolling over and over again down the hill, all the time increasing in size as it moves towards a final destination. That ending point is the time God establishes a new heaven and earth, when Christ hands rule back to His father. At that time, Jeremiah 31:34 will be fulfilled, because all living then will be in God's Kingdom, knowing God. Only then will teaching become unnecessary.
