sermonette: Offerings and Taxes
A Thoughtful Process
Richard T. Ritenbaugh
Given 09-Apr-20; Sermon #1537s-AM; 21 minutes
Richard Ritenbaugh, comparing the tax systems devised by human governments with God's offerings, observes that mankind's tax laws are intricate, while God's system of offerings are straightforward. Deuteronomy 16:16 does not specify the exact amount of the offering, but does ask us to make a thoughtful recollection of the physical and spiritual benefits received, including healings, protection from accidents, open doors to new opportunities, closed doors to things we would have regretted, a raise, opportunities to travel, reconciled relationships and new skills learned. Psalm 103 provides a checklist of all the things for which we should be thankful. Everything we have comes from God. Paul reminds us that we reap what we sow. If we give generously, imitating God, He sees growth in us and in our appreciation of His graciousness to us. God enriches us for our liberality.
