sermonette: Implications of the Gospel of the Kingdom

David C. Grabbe
Given 23-Jan-21; Sermon #1580s; 19 minutes

Description: (hide)

Jesus preached the Gospel of the Kingdom of God to a downtrodden people, suffering because of the power structures over them. Corruption has characterized all human government from the beginning of time. From the time that our original parents partook of the forbidden fruit, the human heart has been out of alignment with the Creator. It is impossible for mankind to produce a just and equitable society. To those whom God has called into His marvelous light, fraternizing with the world's political systems is out of the question. Though God's people live in worldly domains, their real citizenship is in a spiritual rather than a physical nation (where they are only pilgrims and ambassadors). God admonishes His people to pray for the physical leaders in order that they have may have peace, realizing that God is capable of controlling the behavior of kings (Proverbs 21:1) just as He stirred the heart of Cyrus and humbled Nebuchadnezzar. God jealously guards His people—the apple of His eye, protecting them against the evil machinations of men. God's people must let go of the world's solutions, involving party spirit, revolutions, and power struggles, placing their whole trust in the absolute sovereignty of Almighty God, who will ultimately destroy every worldly government.
