As culture becomes ever more degenerate, the sin of reviling has become more pervasive, as impatient narcissists lash out at others, using foul, abusive and insulting language. For example, political debates have become vituperative, degenerating into mud-slinging contests, rather than edifying events aimed at elevating the level of discourse in the public square. Reviling, an ugly work of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21) and a major trait of Satan the devil, is also a capital sin on the same level as fornication and sodomy, barring people from entering God's Kingdom (I Corinthians 6:9-10). Gossip, slander, practical jokes, teasing, and scorning are all hybrids of reviling. Our Lord and Savior received more reviling than any other man to walk the earth, yet, as the exemplar of self-control, He never took the opportunity to retaliate in kind. As followers of Christ, God's people must follow His sterling example.
